Famvir (Famciclovir)

Famvir is an active drug against viruses (antiviral). It is indicated for the treatment of herpes zoster, including ophthalmic herpes (zoster ophthalmicus) due to herpes and genital herpes and prevention of its recurrence.

This applies to both patients and patients with intact immune system with a weakened immune system.

In patients over 50 years with shingles resp. ophthalmic herpes, early treatment with Famvir (within 72 hours after the onset of rash) may have a beneficial effect on the appearance of herpetic pain associated with shingles resp. ophthalmic herpes.

Treatment with Famvir should be started as soon as possible after the first signs of infection.

This medication should be used only on prescription.

What does it take into account outside the treatment?

Your doctor has prescribed this drug for the treatment of your current condition. The virostatic contained in Famvir is not active on all micro-organisms that cause infectious diseases. The use of a misnomer virostatic or used improper dosage can cause complications. So you should not use this medicine on your own to treat other diseases or others. Similarly, in case of subsequent new infection, do not use Famvir without consulting your doctor again.

Dosage / Instructions

How to use Famvir?

Adults

Unless medically prescribed, the dosage is as follows:

a) Patients with an intact immune system

Zona

Daily dose: 2 × 500 mg. Duration: 7 days.

Patients over 50 years: Prevention herpetic pain

Daily dose: 3 × 500 mg. Duration: 7 days.

Ophthalmic herpes (zoster ophthalmicus)

Daily dose: 3 × 500 mg. Duration: 7 days.

Genital herpes

– First Episode

Daily dose: 250 mg × 3 or 3 × 2 tablets of 125 mg.

Duration: 5 days.

– Recurrent infection

Daily dose: 2 × 125 mg. Duration: 5 days.

– Prevention of recurrent infection

Daily dose: 2 × 250 mg. Duration: according to doctor’s prescription.

b) Patients with a weakened immune system

Zona

Daily dose: 3 × 500 mg. Duration: 10 days.

Genital herpes

Daily dose: 2 × 500 mg. Duration: 7 days.

Children

Lack of experience of this medicine in children, Famvir should not be used in children.

Instructions

Swallow the film without chewing tablets with water. Famvir can be taken regardless of meals.

– Patients with an intact immune system shingles prevention of post-herpetic pain in patients over 50 years, ophthalmic herpes, and the first episode of genital herpes should normally take Famvir at sunrise, mid-day and / or at bedtime.

– Patients with a weakened immune system shingles: take a coated tablet at sunrise, mid-day and at bedtime. Genital Herpes: Take a coated tablet at sunrise and sunset.

– Recurrent genital herpes and prevention of recurrences of genital herpes to a film-coated tablet at sunrise and another at bedtime.

In case of impaired kidney function, your doctor will adjust the dose accordingly.

If you forget to take a film-coated tablet, take it as soon as you remember. Then take the next dose at the usual time and continue as above.

Once the virostatic treatment was begun, it must continue as long as the doctor has prescribed. The symptoms often disappear before the complete cure of the infection. Too short a period of treatment or premature discontinuation of treatment may lead to a new outbreak of the disease.

Do not change the prescribed dosage on your own. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you think that the effectiveness of your medicine is too weak or too strong.

Adverse

What side effects Famvir can it be?

In some patients, Famvir can cause headaches, nausea, diarrhea, drowsiness, vomiting, abdominal pain, rash, disorientation and, especially in the elderly, dizziness. These symptoms are usually mild.

Indicated for patients with renal dysfunction: when dose adjustment has not been made, there was rarely kidney failure.

About Genital Herpes: This disease is transmitted through sexual contact. The risk of contamination of your partner is increased during acute episodes.
